Samosa Puffs

Want homemade Samosas? But think they are too time consuming? These quick and simple Samosa Puffs have the authentic spicy filling with a unique flaky crust.

For the 5 days of Diwali, I am sharing 5 of my favorite Indian inspired recipes.  Try out these delicious Masala Chai Muffins, shared on the first day, Dhantheras.  The second day of Diwali is Kali Chaudas, where kali means dark and chaudas means fourteenth (marking the fourteenth day in the lunar cycle).   This day symbolizes the  victory of good over evil by shining light on life.  Most people draw rangoli designs with colored powders and decorate them with tea candles.

For the second day of Diwali, here is a light lunch recipe: Samosa Puffs.  For those of you who don’t know, samosas are a fried Indian dish filled with a savory pea and potato mixture, usually in the shape of a pyramid.  They do require a bit of work: make the filling, make the dough, and then fry the samosas.  These Samosa Puffs take a shortcut on the dough and require no frying.  Simply saute the vegetables, mix in the spices, scoop the filling onto the dough, and bake in the oven!  Enjoy them with your favorite chutney!  I love my mom’s green chutney made out of cilantro and jalapenos ๐Ÿ™‚

I have not tried making puff pastry dough from scratch.  Maybe one day I will.  But from what I hear, it takes a lot of time, patience, and mostly folding butter into the dough.  Since this was a quick recipe with a shortcut, I got my ready made puff pastry dough from Trader Joe’s.  Be sure to follow the thawing instructions (I left mine out too long, and the dough started to stick to the wax paper).
